Wood, Zapien: How the midterms could impact US-Mexico relations

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The November midterm elections could fundamentally change the way Mexico needs to engage with Washington, according to a new op-ed in The Hill.

The op-ed is titled: “How the midterms could impact US-Mexico relations.” It was penned jointly by Duncan Wood, CEO of Hurst International Consulting and a fellow at the Wilson Center, and E. Ivan Zapien, a partner in Global Regulatory Affairs at Hogan Lovells Cadwalader.

“Even though the White House will remain in Republican hands, a shift in control of Congress could have major implications for the USMCA, trade negotiations, border security, energy policy and North American supply chains,” Wood wrote on LinkedIn, in reference to the op-ed.

“In a new piece for The Hill, my friend and co-author E. Ivan Zapien and I argue that Mexico needs a strategy for Congress, not just the White House.”

Wood and Zapien argue that a change in congressional control could create new opportunities for bilateral cooperation. However, they said it could also bring greater scrutiny of Mexico’s policies and commitments.

“Either way, Mexico must broaden its engagement in Washington and demonstrate that it is a reliable strategic partner,” Wood said. “With the future of North American economic integration at stake, Mexico cannot afford to be reactive.”
