Hearing the words “you have breast cancer” is something no one ever wants to experience. Yet, for one in eight women, this becomes a reality. Facing such a diagnosis often raises questions about where to turn for the most advanced, trusted care. That’s why it’s important to know what a Breast Center of Excellence is and why it matters.
The National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC) was created to ensure breast centers meet the highest standards in cancer care. Not every facility that treats breast cancer holds this recognition. Accreditation as a “Breast Center of Excellence” is reserved only for centers that voluntarily commit to rigorous quality measures and multidisciplinary treatment approaches.
These accredited centers undergo a thorough evaluation that reviews services across breast surgery, medical oncology, radiation oncology, radiology, and oncology nursing. They must also participate in clinical research and complete annual quality improvement projects. To maintain accreditation, each center is re-evaluated every three years through an onsite review.
In the Rio Grande Valley, DHR Health is the only facility south of San Antonio accredited by the NAPBC as a Breast Center of Excellence. Patients here have access to the full continuum of care, from initial screening and diagnosis to treatment, without having to leave the Valley. Each patient receives an individualized treatment plan, supported by a collaborative team of oncologists working together to achieve the best possible outcome.
As we recognize Breast Cancer Awareness Month, it’s a reminder of the importance of early detection and knowing what resources are available close to home.
