November is National Hospice and Palliative Care Month—a time to recognize the dedicated caregivers and health care professionals who provide comfort, compassion, and dignity to individuals and families facing serious illnesses. It’s also an opportunity to bring awareness to an important distinction many people may not fully understand: the difference between hospice care and palliative care.
Serious illnesses often affect not only an individual’s physical body but also their emotional, social, and spiritual well-being. Palliative care and hospice care address these needs in a similar way, but at different stages. While both focus on comfort, dignity, and quality of life, they differ in timing, eligibility, and goals of care. Understanding these distinctions is crucial for patients and their families when making end-of-life decisions.
Palliative care focuses on managing symptoms, pain, and reducing stress—regardless of the stage of illness. It can be provided alongside treatments intended to cure or control disease. Comfort measures are offered while curative treatments continue, with the goal of improving quality of life while supporting ongoing medical care.
Hospice care, on the other hand, focuses on quality of life, comfort, and supporting the emotional and spiritual needs of both the patient and their loved ones during the final stages of life. Hospice is appropriate when curative treatments are no longer beneficial or desired. The goal is to control pain, ease symptoms, and provide social and spiritual support to both patients and their families.
At DHR Health Hospice, care is about more than medicine—it’s about helping patients and families find peace, dignity, and connection in every moment. Our team provides compassionate, individualized care that honors each person’s journey, ensuring that no one walks it alone.
If you or a loved one are navigating a serious illness, learning about hospice and palliative care can help you make informed decisions about comfort and quality of life.
