EDINBURG, Texas – Hidalgo County Judge Richard Cortez has explained the rationale for distributing CARES Act funding to cities in the county.

The decision on how to apportion funds was made by Hidalgo County Commissioners Court.

Cities with a population of 30,000 and above are receiving more funding than smaller cities. However, some funding is being held back to address the healthcare needs of the county, to help reduce the county’s digital divide and to give financial support to local small businesses.

On Thursday, Cortez and the county commissioners met with local mayors. In a Zoom interview with The Rio Grande Guardian, Cortez gave his report on that meeting.
