WESLACO, Texas – Mark Vega is general manager of McAllen Public Utility.
Recently, Vega testified at a hearing of the Texas House Committee on Natural Resources. The hearing was held in the boardroom of the Lower Rio Grande Valley Development Council in Weslaco.
Vega made the case for the dissolution of the Hidalgo County Water Improvement District No. 3. If dissolved by the Legislature, the assets of HCWID No. 3 could be handed over to the City of McAllen.
Members of the Rio Grande Valley legislative delegation have tried to have HCWID No. 3 dissolved in four previous legislative sessions but without success.
Legislation passed during the last legislative session – SB 2185 – was discussed by the Committee on Natural Resources at its hearing in Weslaco.
The chairman of the committee, state Rep. Tracy King of Batesville, said he would hold a hearing about HCWID No. 3 when he effectively killed the last attempt to dissolve the water district on a point of order at the tail end of last season.
The dissolution legislation was authored by state Sen. Juan Hinojosa of McAllen. The bill was carried in the House by state Rep. Terry Canales of Edinburg. Both lawmakers spoke at the Weslaco hearing.
