McALLEN, Texas – South Texas College recently hosted its 2023 Workforce Summit. One of the panelists was Rose Benavidez, president of Starr County Industrial Foundation.

In her remarks, Benavidez said: “We’ve had about $250 million of renewable energy projects that are under development now that will create about 300 temporary construction jobs for local residents.”

Benavidez continued: “But one of the things that is unique to our region at this point is we’re actually currently in the process of developing $350 million worth of solar projects in our community. We’re going to have one of the largest solar farms in Starr County.

“You know, Starr County is rich in land, a lot of ranch land that has created so many challenges for the landowners because of the drought and a lot of different reasons.  Ranching has become more problematic economically and so this has generated not only dollars for those families, but has been extremely beneficial to expanding the tax base in our community as well.”
