MCALLEN, Texas – Texas A&M University President M. Katherine Banks has announced Manny Vela as the new chief operating officer of Texas A&M Higher Education Center at McAllen.

Vela will be retiring soon as CEO of Valley Baptist Health System. He will start at A&M in mid-May.

Banks also announced updates about the Texas A&M University Higher Education Center at McAllen at a news conference held at the campus. One update is the building of a new nursing facility at the McAllen campus.

Other speakers included Texas A&M University System Chancellor John Sharp, Texas A&M University System Regent Mike Hernandez, state Sen. Juan Hinojosa of McAllen, and Vela.
