PHARR, Texas – With all the negative publicity at the national level about life on the border, it is important for local leaders to promote the region.

This is the view of state Rep. R.D. ‘Bobby’ Guerra of McAllen. Guerra was interviewed by reporters at Pharr Bridge Board’s recent “Taste of Trade” event.  Every year the Board hosts the event to celebrate the start of the fresh season.

Guerra played a key role in helping improve wait times for trucks crossing the Pharr International Bridge. His legislation brought more inspectors to the bridge to check the fruit and vegetables being imported from Mexico.

Guerra said the Valley is the gateway to the United States. He also said that the trade that crosses the Pharr International Bridge is important for the state of Texas and the nation as a whole, not just the Valley.

Asked if state leaders understand this, Guerra said: “We are working on it.”
