HARLINGEN, Texas – The new-look Cameron County legislative delegation fully supports a second causeway being built that links South Padre Island to the mainland.
State Sen.-elect Morgan LaMantia, D-South Padre Island, state Rep. Erin Gamez, D-Brownsville, and state Rep.-elect Janie Lopez, R-San Benito, spoke about their top agenda items going into the 88th Legislature at a recent forum hosted by the Greater Harlingen Chamber of Commerce. Consultant Rolando Vela helped put the event together.
It was Harlingen Mayor Norma Sepulveda who asked the legislators to make their views known about a second SPI causeway in the Q&A portion of the forum.
Sepulveda said a second causeway would benefit the entire Rio Grande Valley. She said SPI directly impacts Harlingen because most visitors flying in to enjoy a vacation on SPI use Valley International Airport.
LaMantia, Gamez, and Lopez all said they support a second causeway and work hard in the next legislative session to make it happen.
