HIDALGO, Texas - Extending Las Milpas Road by connecting 10th Street to S. McColl Road will boost economic development in the northern part of the city of Hidalgo, says Hidalgo County Commissioner Eduardo “Eddie” Cantu.
Cantu hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the project on Oct. 15.
“We're really excited open Las Milpas Road. It's a project that will connect McColl and 10th Street. It's a new east-west corridor for the city of Hidalgo, which is going to help them with their growth,” Cantu told the RGG Business Journal.
Cantu acknowledged the project has been a long time coming.
“It was a project that started off with possibly building a road from from 10th Street to the canal. But we went ahead and took it upon ourselves to expand it and make it a beautiful east-west corridor. And so we went ahead and built a bridge over the canal,” Cantu said.
Asked to comment on the growth of Hidalgo, Cantu said:
“There are some new subdivisions on the east side, and there's a lot of subdivisions to come on the west side. So it (Las Milpas) is a road that allows progress, transportation. There's a lot of transportation needs in this area, from commercial traffic to industrial traffic. It's a great road for Hidalgo, for Hidalgo's growth.”
One of the speakers at the event was Hidalgo Mayor Sergio Coronado.
“This is a great day for the city of Hidalgo. Today, we gather to celebrate the ribbon cutting of the Las Milpas Road extension project, a project that represents progress, collaboration and our shared vision for a better future for our community,” Coronado said from the podium.
Coronado thanked Commissioner Cantu for the attention he pays to Hidalgo.
“Commissioner Cantu, your commitment to improving the quality of life for our residents has been evident in every project you've helped bring to our city of Hidalgo. From the inclusive park on McColl to the Valle Alto Park renovation, and from Dicker Road and the drainage improvement to the construction of a youth facility,” Coronado said.
“Your efforts have left a lasting mark on Hidalgo. The Las Milpas Road extension is yet another example of your dedication to connecting our community, supporting economic development and making our city safer and stronger.”
