Video: Indian singer Charles Antony visits the Valley

MCALLEN, Texas - One of Indian singer and guitarist Charles Antony’s claims to fame is that he once sang on stage with the late Argentinian soccer star, Diego Maradona. 

Another claim to fame is that he can sing songs in 18 languages, including English and Spanish. He says he learned to sing in many different languages because he would get requests for the songs when holding down a residency at different hotels.

Antony, who is now based in Britain, was born and raised in Cochin, in the state of Kerala, in India. “We call it God’s own country,” Antony said. His native tongue is Malayalam.

Antony made his first visit to the United States recently. The tour included a few performances in the Rio Grande Valley. The visit also saw Antony honored with a proclamation from the City of McAllen.

Before he returned to the U.K., Antony was interviewed by McAllen-based impresario Hari Namboodiri for the Rio Grande Guardian. At the end of the interview, Antony sang a couple of famous songs, one in English and one in Spanish.
