BROWNSVILLE, Texas - Economic development corporation leaders from across the Rio Grande Valley have thanked Brownsville Navigation District for giving them a guided tour of the Port of Brownsville.

Among the communities represented on the tour were Weslaco, Edinburg, Elsa and McAllen, along with the Rio Grande Valley Partnership.

The EDC leaders said they learned a lot.

“A great way to end the week. Our EDC board traveled to the Port of Brownsville to tour the region’s deep sea port. Thanks to Eduardo Campirano and his staff for rolling out the red carpet for us and making it a very informative tour,” said Steve Valdez, executive director of Weslaco EDC.

Among those representing the City of Edinburg on the tour were Mayor Ramiro Garza, who is also president of RG Economic Advisors, and Raudel Garza (no relation), executive director of Edinburg EDC.

Ramiro Garza said: “Today, I took the opportunity to represent Edinburg and joined an Hidalgo county delegation to tour the Port of Brownsville. The Port of Brownsville is the only deepwater port located on the U.S.-Mexico border that handles a variety of cargo and is recognized as a major center of intermodal transportation. Many thanks to Eddie Campirano, port director, and Steve Guerra, port chairman, for providing us an in depth overview of all that is happening at the port.”

Representing the City of Elsa was Daniel Rivera, executive director of Elsa EDC.

“Grateful for the opportunity to join EDC directors and professionals from McAllen, Edinburg, and across the Valley for an insightful session with Port Director and CEO Eduardo Campirano on the workings of the Port of Brownsville,” Rivera said.

“We delved into the multitude of projects and industries operating there, understanding what makes our port a significant asset for both our region and the state.”

Rivera said he was “thrilled to learn” about the upcoming projects like NextDecade’s liquefied natural gas export terminal. He pointed out that this investment is worth nearly $20 billion.

“A big thank you to Mike Carrera for orchestrating such an enlightening event. The discussions and knowledge shared were invaluable, fostering deeper conversations on the economic development of our region,” Rivera added.

Representing McAllen were City Commissioners Seby Haddad and Omar Quintanilla, along with McAllen EDC President and CEO Keith Patridge. Representing the RGV Partnership was President Daniel Silva.
