MCALLEN, Texas - The Council for South Texas Economic Progress recently hosted university presidents and senior academic leaders from the Rio Grande Valley and Northern Tamaulipas at the Cambria Hotel in McAllen.

The working session marked the formal establishment of COSTEP’s Binational Higher Education Advisory Council.

During the meeting COSTEP CEO Adam Gonzalez made the case of a Strategic Inventory of Educational Offerings and asked all the high education institutions for their help. They were asked to complete an in-depth questionnaire that will help COSTEP map, in detail, the region’s academic programs and institutional capabilities.

Gonzalez said the session “sets the groundwork for a long-term effort to align education and industry across both sides of the border.” With the Strategic Inventory underway, he said, higher education institutions will soon be able to:

  • Update or design academic programs that respond to industry needs
  • Strengthen partnerships with employers in key regional sectors
  • Provide students with clearer visibility into high-demand career pathways
  • Support regional promotion efforts with data-driven insights on talent readiness

At the conclusion of the meeting, the RGG Business Journal secured an interview with Cledia Hernandez, vice chancellor of Texas State Technical College. She said TSTC fully supports COSTEP's endeavors.
