SOUTH TEXAS HEALTH SYSTEM TO UNDERSCORE SERIOUS RISKS OF HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE AND EDUCATE RGV COMMUNITY ON WAYS TO PREVENT SERIOUS COMPLICATIONS IN UPCOMING WEBINAR
STHS to tackle the dangers of hypertension, a serious health condition in the Rio Grande Valley, as part of its next “Let’s Talk Your Health” online seminar
Nearly half of adults in the United States have high blood pressure, also known as hypertension, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and only 25% of those with hypertension have their condition under control.
The consequences of not keeping one’s blood pressure in check can be fatal. In 2021, high blood pressure was a primary or contributing factor in nearly 700,000 deaths in the United States, according to the CDC.
That’s likely because uncontrolled blood pressure can lead to serious health complications such as heart disease, heart attack and stroke, which are among the leading causes of death in the U.S.
Unfortunately, many people who have developed hypertension don’t even know it’s an issue since measuring your blood pressure is the only way to know whether you have it.
But there is an upside. In most cases, blood pressure can be managed, lowering one’s their risk for serious health problems, by making healthy lifestyle changes. Implementing more physical activity, not smoking, eating a healthy diet, maintaining a healthy weight and managing stress are sure-fire ways to help control one’s blood pressure. It can also be managed with medication.
In the next installment of its “Let’s Talk Your Health” webinar series, South Texas Health System will shine a spotlight on the importance of getting your blood pressure checked and highlight the dangers that come with developing hypertension as part of its commitment to the helping Valley residents stay on top of their health.
Led by Dr. Augustine George, an interventional cardiologist with STHS Clinics, this special online seminar will highlight ways to prevent high blood pressure and provide tips for managing the condition if it does develop.
