MCALLEN, Texas - South Texas Health System McAllen is celebrating the official arrival of the facility’s new chief executive officer with a special cocktail reception.

The event is aimed at introducing Emma Maria Montes-Ewing, the facility’s first-ever Latina CEO, to state, county and local leaders from across the region. Those attending will hear some of her plans for one of the oldest hospitals in the Rio Grande Valley and the largest of South Texas Health System’s 11 facilities.

Montes-Ewing's first day at work at STHS McAllen was Jan. 2. She previously served as CEO at STHS McAllen’s sister facility, Doctors Hospital of Laredo.

A STHS press advisory says Montes-Ewing has "20 years of healthcare leadership experience in building high-performing teams, developing service lines, increasing revenue in competitive markets and building healthy organizational cultures."

Additionally, the advisory says, she has demonstrated strengths in attracting talent and driving performance.

A native of Peru, Montes-Ewing earned her bachelor’s degree in biology, with a major in international business and communications, from Hardin Simmons University in Abilene; her Master of Science in Health Care Administration at Trinity University in San Antonio; and her MBA in Healthcare Administration from the University of Phoenix.

As the CEO of STHS McAllen, Montes-Ewing is responsible for leading the facility’s more than 1,100 staff members in the delivery of quality, compassionate care to patients in the Rio Grande Valley.

The special CEO Meet & Greet event will be held on Thursday, January 18 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Casa de Palmas in McAllen.
