STHS: Let's Talk Mental Health

Posted

EDINBURG, Texas - May is National Mental Health Month and to commemorate it South Texas Health System is to host a webinar on the topic.

The virtual seminar is entitled “Let’s Talk Mental Health.” It takes place Thursday, May 2, from 5:50 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. via STHS’s Facebook page.

Kevin Trussell, MSN, RN, is director of nursing at STHS Behavioral. He will lead the interactive discussion. Trussell says he will provide an overview of how mental health can affect one’s overall well-being, highlight warning signs and treatment options for mental illness and practices to support one’s mental health.

Tom Castañeda, director of marketing and public relations for STHS, says the health system is committed to helping break the stigma surrounding mental health and improve the community’s overall wellbeing.

“It’s never too early – or late – to learn about mental health. Each year, one in five Americans will experience a mental illness, according to the National Alliance on Mental Illness. As something that affects how we feel, think, behave and interact with others, mental health is at the forefront of our lives,” Castañeda said.

“Educating yourself on the topic can better help you and your family become more comfortable with having open conversations about mental health, acknowledging when problematic language arises and sharing information on common mental conditions to eliminate misconceptions that contribute to stigma.”

Castañeda added: “Speaking honestly about your own mental health struggles can help to normalize conversations about mental health and create a more comfortable and safe space for others to share their own mental health concerns.”
