State Reps. Canales and Martinez endorse Vallejo for CD 15

ALTON, Texas - Congressional District 15 candidate Michelle Vallejo has secured the endorsement of two members of the Hidalgo County’s legislative delegation.

State Reps. Armando ‘Mando’ Martinez of Weslaco and Terry Canales of Edinburg say Vallejo is the best bet in the Democratic Party primary runoff and the general election.

"In a district as diverse as Texas’ 15th Congressional District, we need a leader that represents everyone and makes sure their voices are heard,” said Martinez, pictured above with Vallejo. “That is why I endorse Michelle Vallejo. Her energy and experience makes her the right choice for Congress.”

Canales took a similar view.

“Texas working families deserve a congresswoman who will fight for everyday people. Michelle is a leader who will listen to and be a bold champion for our underserved communities.” Canales said. “I am supporting Michelle Vallejo because she has the grit and vision to fight for the hardworking people in Congressional District 15.”

Vallejo said she was honored to have such support.

"I am honored to have the support of our highly esteemed state legislators. This is a truly powerful moment in South Texas. Together we are building a movement that empowers us all. Vamos Por Quince,” Vallejo said.

Vallejo has also won the endorsement of defeated Congressional District 15 candidate Eliza Alvarado. Other supporters include the Alton mayor and city commissioners, former state Sen. Wendy Davis of Fort Worth, Congresswoman Sylvia Garcia of Houston, Congresswoman Veronica Escobar of El Paso, U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, the Working Families Party, and the United Farmworkers union.

Vallejo pointed out that the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) declared CD 15 as a top priority as it seeks to keep a Democratic majority in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Support for Ramirez

Vallejo’s opponent in the CD 15 primary runoff, Ruben Ramirez, has also touted a recent endorsement.

The attorney, educator and veteran is being supported by U.S. Rep. Linda Sanchez of California. Sanchez is the DCCC vice chair for Latino Engagement and a former vice chair of the House Democratic Caucus.

“Ruben has always shown up when his community called him — in the classroom, on the battlefield, or in the courtroom. I know that he will show up and fight for everyone in his district. I look forward to working with Ruben in Congress,” Sanchez said.

Ramirez said he was honored to receive the endorsement.

“It is an honor to have earned Rep. Sanchez’s support,” Ramirez said. “She has demonstrated time after time just what we need to do to grow our strength in Latino communities and expand access to the American Dream. I look forward to working with her to expand access to affordable health care, protect Social Security and Medicare, and ensure that every child has access to a great education.”

Also backing Ramirez are U.S. Reps. Vicente Gonzalez of McAllen, and Ruben Gallego of Arizona, along with the McAllen American Federation of Teachers.

Runoff Election Day is May 24 with Early Vote running from May 16 thru May 20.
