RIO GRANDE CITY, Texas - The Rio Grande Guardian International News Service recorded the opening remarks at Starr County Industrial Foundation’s recent "SCIF Talks" event.

The program was titled “Exploring the Vast Potential of Public-Private Partnerships in Bridging the Digital Divide. A Conversation with VTX1 Internet.”

The event was held at South Texas College’s Starr County Campus.

A news advisory from SCIF set the scene for the discussion. It said:

“The passing of Proposition 8 earlier this month approved the creation of a $1.5 billion fund for the development and expansion of network infrastructure in our Texas communities. The Starr County region has historically faced a challenge with the availability of reliable broadband connectivity that became more evident during the COVID-19 pandemic when residents struggled with access to virtual resources, such as telemedicine, long distance learning, and remote work.

“In response, the star County Industrial Foundation was promoted to begin exploring options for short-term relief and collaborations to create long term solutions. That work has included partnering with VTX1 Internet for strategies that will expand broadband and related services in our area.

“Join us for an update on VTX1’s progresses Starr County and to learn more about the significance of growing public private partnerships to help secure our share of available funds and potential projects.”

In her opening remarks, SCIF President Rose Benavidez said bridging the digital divide is “critical for the growth of our community.”

In his remarks, Starr County Judge Eloy Vera said VTX1 has been an “exceptional partner” for the community. “They have been with us through thick and thin. They've been helping us with a lot of things. Anytime we need anything they're always there to help,” Vera said.

In his remarks, Rio Grande City Mayor Joel Villarreal spoke in support of public-private partnerships. “In fact, Rio Grande City is a prime testament to the power inherent in such partnerships. Together, many of us here, together we have transformed our region for generations to come.”
