RIO GRANDE CITY, Texas - A New World Screwworm Public Educational Forum will take place Tuesday, June 30, 2026, at the South Texas College Starr County Campus Student Activities Center (Building H).

The forum will start at 10:30 a.m.

The event is being hosted jointly by Starr County Industrial Foundation (SCIF), Starr Camargo Bridge Company, Starr County, and South Texas College.

The groups are inviting ranchers, farmers, livestock owners, agricultural stakeholders, wildlife advocates, healthcare professionals, and community members to attend.

“As concerns surrounding the potential threat of the New World screwworm continue to grow, this educational forum will provide valuable information on the pest’s impact, prevention measures, and the importance of preparedness throughout South Texas,” SCIF said, in a press release.

The forum will feature presentations from leading experts, including:

  • Dr. Sandra Leyendecker, Texas Animal Health Commission
  • Dr. Ronald Tyler, Department of State Health Services
  • Dr. Alberto Perez, Department of State Health Services

“Speakers will discuss the biology and history of the New World screwworm, its effects on livestock, wildlife, and agriculture, potential public health considerations, and the coordinated efforts underway to protect the region,” SCIF said.

“Attendees will also learn how early detection, reporting, and community awareness play critical roles in safeguarding local industries and animal populations.”

SCIF points out that agriculture remains a vital part of Starr County’s economy and heritage. “This forum serves as an opportunity for stakeholders and residents to gain accurate, up-to-date information directly from subject matter experts and to ask questions regarding prevention, response efforts, and available resources.”

The event is free and open to the public. Educational materials will be available in both English and Spanish.
