RioPlex, COSTEP, UTRGV to give economic update at RGVHCC strategic retreat

MCALLEN, Texas - The Rio Grande Valley Hispanic Chamber of Commerce is to host a Strategic Retreat at PNC Bank in McAllen on Friday, Jan. 9.

The event, which starts at 9:00 a.m. and ends at 2:30 p.m., will include participation from Hispanic Chamber leaders from across the state of Texas. 

The keynote speaker will be Massey Villarreal, president and CEO of Precision Task Group. He will speak about the work of Comité de 100 in Washington, D.C. 

There will be two panel discussions, one on the economic climate in South Texas, and one on the Historically Under-Utilized Business Program. 

The economic development panel will consist of Mario Reyna of RioPlex, Rick Carrera of COSTEP, and Ron Garza of UT-Rio Grande Valley. The moderator will be Julian Alvarez of Lone Star National Bank.

The HUB panel will include state and federal updates from representatives with UTRGV and the Small Business Administration.

There will also be remarks from Monica Andry, chair of the Texas Hispanic Chambers of Commerce Coalition. 

Cynthia Sakulenzki, president and CEO of the RGV Hispanic Chamber, will give opening and closing remarks. Sakulenzki said the strategic outcomes RGVHCC and THCCC hope to achieve from the retreat are:

  • Unified statewide advocacy platform
  • Coordinate response to legislative and economic threats
  • Clear understanding of HUB and procurement landscape
  • Stronger coalition data and storytelling capacity
  • Defined roadmap for the 2026 legislative cycle
