WESLACO, RGV - State Rep. Armando Martinez has quashed speculation that a member of his family fired the gun that resulted in a bullet hitting his head.
State Rep. Armando MartinezMartinez, D-Weslaco, was struck by a bullet falling from the sky while seeing in the New Year at a premise north of Weslaco. He was rushed to hospital and required surgery.
Austin media outlets speculated Wednesday that it could have been a member of the family that fired a gun into the air and that the bullet came down and hit him in the head.
“That is not true. Nobody had a gun that night. It upsets me to know that people would make that up,” Martinez told the Rio Grande Guardian.
“Trust me, we aren't that stupid to have guns around the kids, much less shoot them.”
Asked how his recovery is going, Martinez said: “All is well. I had a follow up with the physician and he said the wound is healing nicely.”
Martinez said his staff are keeping tabs on important issues in his district while he recuperates. A top issue in his district is the plan to build State Highway 68 from Donna to Edinburg. TxDOT held a public meeting about the project on Tuesday.
Asked if he will be ready for the 85th Legislature, which starts Jan. 10th, Martinez said: “Yes, sir.”
