Peña: How BCIC keeps delivering for Brownsville

Posted

Not long ago, a friend told me a story of a neighbor who spotted a rare bird in our city and shared it on a local Facebook birding group. Within days, a birding enthusiast from Vancouver, Canada boarded a plane and spent a week here just for the chance to see it and snap what’s now a treasured photo.

That simple moment is a perfect metaphor for Brownsville: what is unique here is worth traveling for, worth celebrating, worth investing in. Reflecting on August, with the adoption of our 2025–2029 Strategic Plan and three new IEDC Excellence Awards, I’d like to share how BCIC is building on that same idea, turning what makes Brownsville special into opportunities for growth that benefit us all.

Across community projects, the team advanced work that directly impacts residents and visitors. The Downtown Renaissance Master Plan officially kicked off at the eBridge Center, Putegnat Elementary received support through a school supply drive, and food entrepreneurs provided input during a focus group for the Cannery’s shared commercial kitchen and farmers market. Community Development Manager Eric Quintero was also selected for RGV Leadership, where he will collaborate with peers across the Valley to address healthcare, infrastructure, education, and economic growth, bringing new opportunities back to Brownsville. Administrative Coordinator Nelly Garcia was accepted into Leadership Brownsville Class XLI, joining a cohort of local leaders dedicated to strengthening our community through service and collaboration.

Our team continued to expand opportunities for entrepreneurs. The Space Accelerator welcomed its first participants, and a new agreement with the Mexican Consulate is creating pathways for Mexican women entrepreneurs in the Valley. Investor-focused sessions with Alamo Angels connected ventures with regional capital. I am also proud to share that Vice President of Entrepreneurship and Innovation, Nathan Burkhart, was named one of North America’s Top 50 Economic Developers of 2025 by Consultant Connect, following his earlier recognition on the Economic Development 40 Under 40 list.

Community storytelling remained a focus, with campaigns and materials that earned national and international recognition. The Thank You Brownsville: Support Local campaign continued to highlight small businesses; you may have seen our billboard ads along the expressway or your favorite entrepreneur featured on our social media. At the same time, the Future of Texas Starts Here brochure earned Gold from IEDC, and the Success Story video series received Bronze.

Good stewardship was recognized as well. Our eBridge Fund received Silver from IEDC for closing financing gaps for local businesses, a reflection of both the strength of the program and the careful financial management behind it. Michael Rodriguez joined the board, adding new expertise, and I was honored to be elected to the Brownsville Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, a role that will strengthen collaboration with small businesses and align with the commitments outlined in our Strategic Plan.

Thank you to everyone who contributed time, ideas, and support in August. Your partnership helps BCIC keep delivering for Brownsville.
