Posted

Shon A. Gonzalez, born June 5, 1953 in Rio Grande City and raised in Hebbronville, Texas, passed away after a brief illness.

A gifted salesman, Shon also earned a Master’s in Psychology from Texas A&M–Kingsville, graduating with a 4.0 GPA. He worked for AT&T, KGBT-TV, the Start Center, and theRio Grande Guardian until retiring in 2019.

Shon moved to San Antonio to pursue a kidney transplant and became known to his health care teams as proactive, positive, and deeply grateful. He cherished his lifelong friends from Hebbronville, loved the beach, volunteered in Padre Island cleanups, and was an avid NFL fan.

Barbecuing was his signature talent, inherited from his father. He had deep respect for American Veteran’s as his father fought in World War 2 in Normandy.

His greatest joy was returning to his family home in Hebbronville, a trip he made monthly even while on dialysis. He would visit his father and mother’s resting place and always made sure a United States flag was flying. He had a beloved truck he named “Greenie” that accrued over 470,000 miles traveling throughout South Texas for work and family visits. Shon will be laid to rest beside his parents, Asencion “Chencho” Gonzalez and Genevieve “GL” Gonzalez in Hebbronville.

He is survived by his siblings Zita Solis, Rita Gonzalez, Leticia Gonzalez, Grace White, and Randy Gonzalez; his children Sean Gonzalez and Erin Ingrid; and two grandchildren.

A Celebration of Life will occur on March 28th, Saturday, at the family home at 1205 West Viggo. The celebration will be from 12 am until 6 pm. A private service is planned in April for immediate family and close friends.

Donations to Veterans of Foreign Wars can be made. Shon planned to put in a vegetable garden in Hebbronville so donations for A Salsa Garden would be welcome. Please email zitamsolis@outlook.com for more information.
