EDINBURG, Texas - The National Science Foundation is a strong supporter of UT-Rio Grande Valley’s engineering department, say leaders of the program.
The support was in evidence when two NSF representatives spoke at an Inaugural Ph.D. Launch Celebration hosted recently by the College of Engineering & Computer Science (CECS).
UTRGV leaders say they were proud to have Dr. Germano Iannacchione and Dr. Dr. Daniel G. Linzell in attendance.
“The NSF is the national is the largest research organization in the world. They report to the President of the United States. They oversee research and development in the country. The representatives that came here, they see the potential here. What we are doing here, they think is going to change the nation,” said Dr. Ala Qubbaj, dean of CECS.
“We are very proud that NSF continues to believe in us. And we're very proud that we're given to the nation as well,” said Dr. Karen Lozano, an endowed professor within CECS.

Dr. Iannacchione is a Professor in the Physics Department at Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Worcester, Massachussetts. Earlier this year he was appointed division director of NSF’s division of materials research within the Directorate for Mathematical and Physical Sciences.
“All I can tell you is that the National Science Foundation believed in you, and we take pride in the kind of work and dedication and the time it took to reach this stage,” Iannacchione said in his remarks at the UTRGV event.
Also earlier this year, NSF selected Dr. Linzell of the University of Nebraska–Lincoln (UNL) to serve as division director for the Division of Civil, Mechanical and Manufacturing Innovation. Linzell currently serves as the associate dean for graduate and international programs at the UNL college of engineering and as the Leslie D. Martin Professor in the college’s department of civil and environmental engineering.
“I just want to echo what Germano just said about the significance of this particular, I would say, you know. mind blowing event How about that?” Linzell said in his remarks the UTRGV event.
