EDINBURG, Texas - The Museum of South Texas History has posted an in-depth video interview with Dolia González, mother of Vietnam War hero Alfredo “Freddy” González.
Dolia González has passed away at the age of 94. She was 38-years-old when her only son died in combat in February, 1968.
The video interview with Dolia González was conducted by Museum CEO Francisco Guajardo. It took place in November 2020 to coincide with Dolia González giving over to the museum more than 150 letters her son wrote during his two combat tours of Vietnam with the Marine Corps. González wrote the letters from 1965 onwards, right up to his death in 1968.
Freddy González, Edinburg’s most famous son, posthumously received the Medal of Honor for service in the Battle of Hué. He died Feb. 4, 1968 at the age of 21, valiantly protecting his platoon from enemy fire. The USS Gonzalez, a destroyer in the U.S. Navy, was named after him.

State Sen. Juan Hinojosa of McAllen also served in the Marines during the Vietnam War. He said:
“I am saddened to learn of the passing of Dolia González, a beloved member of the Edinburg community. She was the mother of Freddy González, a USMC soldier who was killed in action in Vietnam in 1968. In 1969, Mrs. González was escorted to the White House to receive the Medal of Honor awarded to her son posthumously for saving many Marine lives. As a Gold Star Mother, we are forever grateful to Mrs. González for her sacrifice. May she rest in peace and be in Heaven.”
