MISSION, Texas - The cities of Mission, Texas, and Martínez De La Torre, Veracruz, are official sister cities.

The formal relationship between the two municipal bodies was established in January 2022 when Mission City Council approved Resolution 1757, officially adopting the Mexican city into its sister city program.

The agreement aims to promote cross-border cultural relations, municipal cooperation, and economic development. Local officials from both locations have continued to hold institutional meetings to share strategies regarding safety, emergency response, and municipal governance.

On September 28 a delegation from Martínez De La Torre visited Mission. A press conference was held and remarks were given by Mission Mayor Pro Tem Ruben Plata and Modesto Velázquez Toral, mayor of Martínez De La Torre.

Plata welcomed Mayor Velázquez and his delegation, saying he was glad to have them visit. He talked about the strong connection between the two cities, especially when it comes to agriculture and business. He mentioned that people from Martínez de la Torre have moved to Mission and that businesses in the area help get Mexican produce to other parts of the United States.

Velázquez thanked Plata for welcoming his group and said the two cities have shared a relationship for more than 40 years. He explained that his delegation came to learn from Mission and take ideas back home, especially in areas like public safety, police and fire services, urban development, education, and healthcare. He praised the city for how much it has grown and modernized, and said the visit gave his team a better understanding of what they could improve in their own city.
