MCALLEN, Texas - Carlos Margo is dean of the Center for Advanced Training & Apprenticeships at South Texas College.
He recently gave a presentation to the South Texas Manufacturers Association during a luncheon the group held at the DoubleTree Suites by Hilton in McAllen. Margo spoke about the work his department does.
In his presentation, Margo pointed out that while, on the academic side, STC only operates in Hidalgo and Starr counties, his department stretches across the region.
“We’re not just Hidalgo and Starr anymore. Once we became the Center for Advanced Training and Apprenticeships, we're South Texas-wide. We can provide training anywhere. We're not bound by the geographic restrictions of the taxing base that South Texas College has. We are a self-sustaining department. So, we can train anybody, anywhere, anytime,” Margo said.
“We've been training at night. We've done training Saturdays and Sundays, and we've done the training all the way to Brownsville. We've even done training in Mexico, by the way.”
Margo continued: “Our objective is to provide you with customized, innovative training programs. If you come to us with a training request, we're not going to get something off the shelf and provide it to you. We're going to sit down with you, look at the job description and customize the training according to your actual job. We facilitate that process. We've got excellent staff. We've been doing this for 25 years, and we give you exactly what you need.”
