EDINBURG, RGV - A town hall meeting focusing on Medicaid managed care hosted by two border legislators takes place in Edinburg today.
The two legislators are state Sen. Juan Hinojosa, D-McAllen, vice chair of the Senate Committee on Finance, and state Rep. Richard Peña Raymond, D-Laredo, chair of the House Committee on Human Services.
The event takes place at the Edinburg Conference Center at Renaissance between 8:30 a.m. and 12 noon.
Among those slated to speak at the town hall meeting are Hinojosa, Raymond, Dr. Carlos Javier Cardenas, chair of Doctors Hospital at Renaissance, Chris Traylor, executive commissioner of the Texas Health and Human Services Commission, Charles Smith, deputy executive commissioner of the Texas Health and Human Services Commission, and Stuart Bowen, inspector general of the the Texas Health and Human Services Commission.
Traylor is leaving his post at the end of the month. Smith has been appointed his successor by Gov. Greg Abbott.
The Texas Medical Association recently voted Dr. Cardenas its new president-elect.
Hinojosa and Raymond said medical providers and stakeholders will have the opportunity to provide their feedback to the HHSC leadership and Managed Care Organizations and ask questions regarding Medicaid managed care.
Asked why the town hall meeting is important, healthcare lobbyist Jacob C. Fuller said: "The town hall meeting is important because the top leaders of Medicaid from HHSC will be in attendance to visit with leaders from managed care organizations. It will be a review of what is working and what is not working in access to health care for citizens of the Rio grande Valley. All healthcare providers are invited to report their positive and negative experiences."
