Congratulations to the City of McAllen on the groundbreaking of the Center for Urban Ecology (CUE) at Quinta Mazatlán World Birding Center, the first of its kind in Texas.
I was honored to take part and offer remarks at this event which marks a significant milestone in McAllen and its commitment to environmental education, research, and community engagement.
The $51.9 million CUE will occupy a 14-acre site, providing space for various activities and programs. This state-of-the-art research center will serve as a hub for young students to connect with nature, learn about the environment and promote conservation efforts. Additionally, university students will have the opportunity to conduct research in the field of urban ecology, contributing to the scientific community's understanding of sustainable urban development.
The impact of the CUE extends beyond education and research. The center is expected to have a positive economic impact on the community, attracting visitors and generating revenue for local businesses. By showcasing the natural beauty of Quinta Mazatlán, the CUE will draw tourists and nature enthusiasts from across the state, the country, and the world further solidifying McAllen's reputation as a premier destination for eco-tourism.
This project would not have been possible without the collaborative efforts of numerous partners. I appreciate the City of McAllen, the Quinta Mazatlán Board of Directors, and the community for their unwavering support and dedication. Together, we have worked tirelessly to educate and promote the natural beauty of Quinta Mazatlán to members of the Legislature and other stakeholders throughout the state. Our RGV legislative delegation has been able to secure $8.5 million in state funding for this project.
Thank you to McAllen Mayor Javier Villalobos, the City Commission, former Mayors Jim Darling and Richard Cortez, City Manager Roy Rodriguez, Val LaMantia, chair of the Quinta Mazatlán board of directors, and all the partners who have contributed to getting us one step closer to making this vision a reality.
