Immigration

Gámez discusses immigration

Posted

Thank you to NHCSL for hosting this important discussion, and to the Cato Institute’s David Bier for presenting the data and research that backs up what many of us already know in our hearts—all immigrants play a vital role in keeping our country running.

Mr. Bier masterfully explained how, contrary to popular belief, immigrants of all skill levels and status have collectively had a positive impact on our government budgets by paying in far more than they receive in direct benefits.

During every year of the 30 year analysis immigrants have had a positive effect on government budgets. Over the entire time period immigrants contributed $24.2 Trillion (inflation adjusted) in taxes. Furthermore, the analysis shows that regardless of status or skill, all types of immigrants including their children play an important role in positively impacting our government budgets.

We know as a border community the positive impact immigrants have in our community. Regrettably, we are already seeing the negative effects of the Trump administration’s immigration policies that include mass deportations,  stripping 1.6 million people in America of their legal status, and policies that will cut legal immigration in half. We see it everyday in houses half built, restaurants half empty, and empty school desks and church pews.

Our communities can not be whole under this continued siege on immigrants, and thanks to the work of Mr. Bier and the Cato Institute we also know now in no uncertain terms our government budgets will suffer too.”
