Cuellar to make big announcement in Rio Grande City on Friday

RIO GRANDE CITY, Texas - U.S. Rep. Henry Cuellar will announce a $28.9 million federal grant for Union Water Supply Corporation in Starr County on Friday, Feb. 2.

The funds will come the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Rural Utilities Service program. They will be used to rehabilitate and expand Union Water Supply Corporation’s existing water treatment plant.

The announcement will be made at the El Cenizo Park Building, 70 Old Casita Boulevard, in Rio Grande City, at approximately 1:00 p.m. on Feb. 2.

Joining Cuellar for the announcement will be Lillian Salerno, USDA Rural Development’s state director for Texas, and Marlene Mendoza, president of Union Water Supply Corporation’s board of directors.

Cuellar, Ph.D., has served in Congress since 2005. His District 28 seat extends from the Rio Grande in the south to San Antonio’s suburbs in the north. He is a senior member of the U.S. House Appropriations Committee. 

Previously, Cuellar served as a Texas State Representative for District 43, based in Laredo, and Texas Secretary of State.

In addition to a funding announcement in Rio Grande City, Cuellar will also be in Roma on Feb. 2. There he and the North American Development Bank will announce a $835,000 federal grant for the City of Roma.

The announcement will take place at Roma-Ciudad Miguel Aleman International Bridge on Bravo Boulevard, Roma, at approximately 11:30 a.m.

The $450,000 was provided by NADBank’s Community Assistance Program (CAP) and will be used to purchase a new landfill compactor. The remaining $385,000 was provided by NADBank’s Technical Assistance Program (TAP) for studies in Mexico related to the rehabilitation of the International Suspension Bridge between Roma and Miguel Aleman.

Joining Cuellar for the announcement will be NADBank Managing Director John Beckham, Roma Mayor Jaime Escobar, Jr., and Ana Garcia, South Texas regional director for U.S. Senator John Cornyn.
