MCALLEN, Texas - U.S. Rep. Henry Cuellar has been asked to elaborate on his claims that the federal cuts to Medicaid will deepen after 2028.

Both Cuellar, and Stan Dorn, director of the health policy project for UnidosUS, made the claim at a recent roundtable discussion UnidosUS held with community advocacy groups in McAllen.

Later, during a “Conversations with Cuellar” webinar with jopurnalists, Cuellar was asked to explain why the cuts would deepen in 2028.

“When you look at the Big Beautiful Bill, there are so many ugly parts to it. It cuts over a trillion dollars from Medicaid. It cuts assistance to the Affordable Health Care Act. I believe the numbers are 34,000 people in my congressional district that will lose health care, including Medicaid also. They say they were not going to touch Medicare, but there is a law called sequestration that will come in and cut this Medicare. Also, almost half a trillion dollars,” Cuellar told reporterz during the webinar.

Asked specifically about the cuts planned for 2028, Cuellar said:

“what you're referring to is… there are some cuts right now, including healthcare, Medicaid, over a trillion dollars, and of course Medicare. Some cuts are implemented now, but they purposely put those cuts to come in after the November election. Think about how sinister that is. They're telling the people, "Hey, we're good guys, we Republicans didn't do anything.’ But there are some the major cuts are coming in after the November election. That is sinister, in my opinion.

“And then, after the 2028 election, more cuts, in a sinister way. They put more cuts to come in after the 2028 election. But the one right now, where people are running for Congress and Senate across the United States, they, in a sinister way, they purposely put those major cuts to happen after the election. It's there, and I don't call this the Big Beautiful Bill. It's ugly. If you depend on Medicaid, over a trillion dollars (cut). If you depend on Obamacare, 34,000 plus people in my congressional district (cut). Food has been cut also. So these are some of the major cuts that are in the bill and, in a very sinister way, are set to be implemented after the November elections.”
