MCALLEN, Texas - Three candidate forums have been scheduled by prestigious civic groups for the marquee race in Hidalgo County this election season - Texas Congressional District 15.
CD 15 is an open seat because the incumbent, U.S. Rep. Vicente Gonzalez, D-McAllen, has moved to neighboring Texas Congressional District 34.
The two candidates vying to replace Gonzalez are Republican Monica De La Cruz and Democrat Michelle Vallejo. (Both candidates are pictured above, with De La Cruz on the left and Vallejo on the right).
The groups putting on the forums are Futuro RGV, the McAllen Chamber of Commerce, and Pharr Camber of Commerce.
First up is the Futuro RGV forum. It takes place Sept. 17 at the McAllen Convention Center.
Next comes the McAllen Chamber forum. It takes place at Oct. 6 at the Radisson Hotel McAllen Airport.
The third of the three big forums is being hosted by the Pharr Chamber. It takes place Oct. 27 at the Pepe Salinas Memorial Civic Center in Pharr.
“To keep our democracy strong it is very important that voters have an opportunity to hear what our candidates want to accomplish if elected to represent them,” said Futuro RGV President Nedra Kinerk.
Kinerk said the League of Women Voters and McAllen Citizens League will be partnering with Futuro to make sure the forum is a success.
“CD 15 is an open seat. Neither of the candidates have been elected to office before. So we are excited to see them on stage together, making the case on why they deserve the support of Congressional District 15 voters.”
