PHARR, Texas - In a strategic bid to capitalize on its booming logistical infrastructure and counter negative national narratives, the City of Pharr has announced the launch of the Gateway Forum, a premier investment and supply chain platform that will kickstart this year’s "Fresh on the Border Week."

The newly minted forum, scheduled for October 7, marks a significant expansion of the city's annual celebration of the fresh produce trade. Organizers intend for the initiative to serve as a magnet for local, domestic, and international investors seeking to tap into the rapid industrial growth occurring along the U.S.-Mexico border.

"The Gateway Forum is a project that was born through a great idea identified through our city commissioners, our mayor, and our city managers," said Yuri Gonzalez, director of international commercial development for the City of Pharr. "The hopes behind the Gateway Forum is to create a space, a platform for investors—local, domestic, but international as well—business owners, and even students that are in the supply chain."

Gonzalez emphasized that while the city has experienced an unprecedented surge in economic activity, it has lacked a singular, comprehensive venue to showcase these opportunities under one roof. The timing is particularly critical as Pharr prepares for an imminent major expansion of the Pharr International Bridge—the nation's leading crossing point for fresh produce.

The forum’s program is designed to deliver a rigorous, multi-faceted look at the regional economy. Scheduled panels will feature comprehensive updates on the Pharr International Bridge, regional transportation infrastructure, economic development strategies, and international relations—with a specific emphasis on reinforcing binational commercial ties with Mexico.

City officials are aiming for a broad economic impact, confirming that the forum will target a wide array of sectors. "When you talk about investment... obviously you want people in the trade, in transportation," Gonzalez noted, pointing to companies currently utilizing the bridge to move commodities like avocados both northbound and southbound. However, the invitation extends far beyond logistics, targeting developers interested in cold storage units, dry warehouses, retail spaces, and hospitality ventures.

Addressing the massive visible expansion along the Military Highway corridor, which has seen an explosion of industrial warehousing in recent years, Gonzalez affirmed that Pharr remains aggressively open for business. She noted that the city’s Economic Development Corporation (EDC) is actively managing substantial inventories of available land and identifying strategic spaces to accommodate further cold and dry storage demands.

Beyond the numbers, the forum is positioned as a critical narrative counterweight. City leadership views the event as a direct response to unfavorable media portrayals of the border region.

"Sometimes we see negative headlines at an international level, and sometimes we’re like, 'Well, what’s happening in the border?'" Gonzalez said. "Come to the border. Let us show you what’s happening. There’s growth happening. We just have a lot of positive and great things happening, and I think it’s important to promote these topics."

The Gateway Forum will kick off a packed four-day itinerary celebrating the region’s dominant role in global trade. More fresh produce crosses the Pharr International Bridge than any other port of entry in the United States, making the annual "Fresh on the Border Week" a critical milestone for the regional industry.

FRESH ON THE BORDER WEEK 2026 SCHEDULE:

Oct. 7: The Gateway Forum – The inaugural international business and investment summit.

Oct. 8: Start of the Produce Season & A Taste of Trade – Held directly at the Pharr International Bridge, marking the official launch of the crossing season.

Oct. 9: Drive for Trade – The annual industry golf tournament, hosted at the Tierra Del Sol golf course.

Oct. 10: The Avocado Festival – The massive community celebration in downtown Pharr, which regularly draws nearly 20,000 attendees.

While the city is teasing the event early to generate international momentum—including an upcoming promotional tour in Mexico—official registration will not open until August 28. Full operational details, including the meeting location, specific times, panel line-ups, and the keynote speaker, will be released concurrently with the opening of registration.

Though acknowledging that the inaugural forum may start on a focused scale, city officials hold global ambitions for the project. "It's the first year, so it might start slow or small," Gonzalez stated. "But we're hoping that in a couple of years it becomes a staple—an international forum."
