City of Elsa, VTX1, provide WiFi to residents

ELSA, Texas - The City of Elsa celebrated the completion of a project with VTX1 that will provide internet access to its small community.

In a trade of services, the city partnered with the internet service provider to set up a fixed wireless antenna to its water tower, which will connect users to the internet. Residents will now be able to access free WiFi at the city’s park and can, if they wish, pay for VTX1 services in their homes.

Elsa Mayor Alonzo Perez Jr. said that the investment will greatly improve the lives of those who rely on the internet for work or school.

“Today isn’t about just technology; it’s about opportunity,” said Perez. “By bringing free WiFi in our city parks, we are opening doors for our children to learn, for families to stay connected and for residents to access the tools that they need to succeed in this world today. Whether it’s a student finishing homework or a parent working remotely, or a young person exploring new ideas, this investment brings those possibilities closer to home. We are also proud to expand choices in our city by partnering up with another internet provider. More options means better service, stronger competition and a brighter future for everyone who calls our city home.”

Elsa EDC Director Daniel Rivera said talks between him and VTX1 Director of Network Operations Mark Castillo began in late 2024. After a few delays, work on the project finally began in February of this year and is now complete. Rivera expressed his excitement for the launch, saying that businesses will also benefit from better connectivity.

“I think being in a rural community like Elsa and in the Delta area, a lot of times it feels like we have to fight a little bit harder to get resources,” said Rivera. “And, when we find great partners like VTX1 that make is easier to do business, it impacts everyone, right? …The people in our school system, our businesses and the ability for an EDC to attract other businesses to come in. So, it’s a huge deal for us, and we’re super excited and grateful for the opportunity.”

In his speech, Castillo thanked the city and his team, saying that closing internet access gaps is what the company strives to do.

“VTX1 wants to remind everyone that this is what we’re about. We’re about our Valley communities. We’re about those communities because we’re from here. We’re about showing up in the places that matter like Elsa and making sure that the Rio Grande Valley has the connectivity that it needs to operate. This tower is more than infrastructure; it’s opportunity; it’s growth; and it’s connection for our families, businesses and our future generations.”

The tower will provide internet service within an 8-mile radius, encompassing parts of the neighboring cities like Edcouch and La Blanca. Internet service is expected to launch Friday, April 17.
