SAN ANTONIO, Texas - John Beckham conducted a fact finding tour of the Rio Grande Valley early last month on behalf of the North American Development Bank.
The tour, co-hosted by Estrada Hinojosa and Company, allowed Valley leaders to meet the incoming managing director of the bank, learn about the institution’s work along the Texas-Mexico border and pitch ideas for infrastructure investment.
Well, on Jan. 1, Beckham’s four-year term as head of NADBank officially started.
“I am honored to assume the position of CEO of NADBank and will continue working to advance its environmental mission and consolidate the institution as a binational leader in supporting the transition to a greener economy through innovative financing and more robust partnerships with stakeholders,” Beckham said.
NADBank is a financial institution established and capitalized in equal parts by the United States and Mexico for the purpose of financing environmental infrastructure projects along their common border.
The United States and Mexico agreed to create the institution in the early 1990s, during the negotiations to setup the North American Free Trade Agreement. Its mission is to develop environmentally and financially sustainable projects with broad community support along the US-Mexico border, in a framework of close cooperation and coordination between the two countries.
Beckham has served as NADBank’s deputy managing director since January 2021. A NADBank press release notes that Beckham’s professional career spans more than 20 years in management positions and that he has “vast experience in finance, developing and executing strategic business plans, promoting economic and social development by deploying capital through financial institutions, structuring financing for renewable energy projects, restructuring distressed investments and executing equity investments in growing mid-sized companies across emerging markets.”
The press release said the bank appreciates the hard work of Calixto Mateos Hanel, its former managing director, and wishes him success in future endeavors.
Beckham’s appointment coincides with the bank’s board of directors approving the 2024-2028 strategic plan. This plan, the press release says, “reaffirms the Bank’s continued focus on investment in water infrastructure to better manage this shared resource along the border and address wastewater problems, as well as reflects the growing binational priority of accelerating investment in greener mobility and the commitment of Mexico and the United States to move towards sustainable development through investments that promote a better quality of life for border residents.”
Beckham noted that “the strategic plan sets ambitious targets for growing the Bank’s project portfolio over the next five years, but with the solid support of its shareholders and Board and the dedication and experience of its staff, the Bank is ready to meet the challenge.”
Prior to joining NADBank, Beckham served as chief investment and operating officer for MicroVest in Bethesda, Maryland. He also worked for 18 years at the Inter-American Investment Corporation (IIC), now IDB Invest, where he held various positions.
Beckham has a BA from the University of Notre Dame and an MBA from Ohio State University.
