Ask the Expert: Understanding Prostate Cancer: The Silent Threat Affecting Men

Posted

Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers affecting men, yet many do not realize how silent it can be in its early stages. During Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, I want to take a moment to explain what prostate cancer is, who is most at risk, and how men can take steps to protect their health. At DHR Health, my colleagues and I are committed to providing comprehensive care for prostate cancer patients here in the Rio Grande Valley.

What is Prostate Cancer?

Prostate cancer begins when cells in the prostate gland grow out of control and form tumors. The prostate is a small gland located below the bladder that plays an important role in semen production. Although prostate cancer starts in the gland itself, it can spread beyond the prostate to nearby organs and, in advanced cases, to the bones and lungs.

Who is at Risk?

As a urologic oncologist, I often remind my patients that while all men are at risk, certain groups face higher odds. Age is the most significant factor — risk rises sharply after 50. In fact, about one in eight American men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during their lifetime. African American men and those with a family history of prostate or other cancers are at even greater risk. Lifestyle factors, such as diets high in animal fat and low in vegetables, can also increase the likelihood of developing prostate cancer.

Prevention and Early Detection

Although there is no guaranteed way to prevent prostate cancer, healthy habits make a difference. Eating a balanced diet, exercising regularly, avoiding tobacco, and limiting alcohol can all contribute to lowering risk. Most importantly, early detection saves lives. Screenings like the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test and the digital rectal exam (DRE) allow us to catch prostate cancer before symptoms appear, when treatment is most effective.

Our Team Approach at DHR Health

At DHR Health, I work closely with a team of specialists in medical oncology and radiation oncology to provide complete, patient-centered care.
