November marks Lung Cancer Awareness Month, making it the perfect time to talk about why early detection remains our strongest tool against this disease. Lung cancer is often called a “silent killer” because it rarely causes symptoms in its early stages. By the time signs such as a persistent cough or shortness of breath appear, the cancer may already be more advanced and difficult to treat. This is why awareness and early detection are so critical.
Advances in imaging have made it possible to detect lung cancer earlier than ever. A low-dose CT (LDCT) screening can identify lung cancer at an earlier, more treatable stage—dramatically improving treatment options and outcomes. LDCT screenings are especially important for adults between 50 and 80 years old who have a history of smoking—whether they are a current or former smoker. For individuals who meet these high-risk criteria, DHR Health is currently offering a $99 LDCT lung cancer screening special through December 31, 2025, helping ensure cost is never a barrier to lifesaving early detection. For more information or to schedule your LDCT, call (956) 362-LUNG (5864).
Screening, however, is only the first step. What happens next—how quickly results are reviewed, which specialists are involved, and how seamlessly care is coordinated—can significantly impact outcomes. DHR Health’s recognition as a Lung Cancer Center of Excellence in Lung Cancer Screening and Lung Cancer Care, along with our Commission on Cancer accreditation, reflects the strength of our multidisciplinary approach. These distinctions mean that the moment an abnormality is detected, patients have access to a coordinated team and nationally recognized standards of care.
Our team includes medical oncologists, pulmonologists, cardiothoracic surgeons, radiologists, nurse navigators, dietitians, and supportive care specialists who work together to streamline evaluations and develop personalized treatment plans. This collaboration ensures that patients receive timely care and the comprehensive support they need throughout their journey.
If there is one message I hope our community takes to heart, it is this: Don’t wait for symptoms. Early detection saves lives.
If you’re unsure whether you qualify for lung cancer screening or would like help assessing your risk, our team at DHR Health is here to guide you. The earlier we detect lung cancer, the more options—and hope—we can offer.
