For many patients, spine pain feels like something they just have to push through — until the day surgery seems like the only option. But the reality is very different now. We’re in a new era of spine care where a broad range of non-surgical treatments can provide lasting relief and help people stay active without ever stepping into an operating room.
Care often begins with physical therapy, the foundation of modern spine treatment. Targeted strengthening, hip stability work, and improved movement patterns can significantly reduce pain and prevent future flare-ups. Medications can support this process by easing inflammation or calming irritated nerves so patients can perform therapy effectively.
When additional help is needed, we have several targeted procedures. Epidural steroid injections (ESIs) calm inflamed nerves, improving mobility and function. Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) remains one of the most impactful interventions for arthritic facet pain, often delivering one to two years of meaningful relief by quieting the tiny nerves that transmit pain.
Newer advances have expanded our toolbox even further. Basivertebral nerve ablation (BVNA) targets vertebrogenic low-back pain inside the vertebral body. Peripheral Nerve Stimulation (PNS) offers a minimally invasive, temporary treatment for nerve pain in the arms or legs. And for chronic or complex nerve-related pain, Spinal Cord Stimulation (SCS) can interrupt pain signals before they reach the brain, restoring quality of life without surgery.
While some cases truly do require surgery — such as severe nerve compression, spinal instability, or progressive weakness — most patients don’t start there. Today, the majority can find significant relief through non-surgical options that are safer, less disruptive, and often just as effective.
The message is simple: spine pain doesn’t have to control your life. With the right combination of therapy, targeted procedures, and modern technology, patients can stay active, avoid surgery whenever possible, and get back to the things that matter most.
