SAN JUAN, Texas - Congressman Colin Allred of Dallas visited Cory's Cakes in San Juan while on the campaign trail earlier this month.
Allred, who is running for U.S. Senate, said many people in the Rio Grande Valley had recommended he pay the famous pastelería a visit that he had to do so.
“Corey is an icon herself and this bakery is an institution. Everybody told me I had to come here,” Allred said.
“But also, I think that our small businesses are our best employers. I think that they know their community often the best. They're the backbone of our communities. Everybody, I think, can imagine a small business in their neighborhood that they go to because they make the best donuts, or whatever the case may be.”
Allred noted that Corey’s Cakes has been in operation since 1978.
“It has shown that it's possible to start small and to buy used equipment and to employ up to 30 people, sometimes during the holiday season. That's a huge success story. And it's also a place, obviously, with such a family atmosphere, so welcoming. So, I am happy to be here.”
In his interview, Allred also spoke about his efforts in Congress to help small businesses, immigration policy, protecting social security and Medicare, and how his Senate campaign is going.
