Audio: Award winner Dalilah Garcia: My other name is Guerrero, so I was born a warrior

BROWNSVILLE, Texas – Dalilah Garcia, president of FemCity Brownsville, was recently awarded the Athena Leadership Award from Athena International.

According to Athena International, the Athena Leadership Award “celebrates exemplary leadership.” The group says it is also “reflective of a quote from Plato: ‘What is honored in a country will be cultivated there.”

The award was presented to Garcia at a luncheon hosted by Brownsville Chamber of Commerce and held at the Brownsville Events Center.

After the event, Garcia gave an exclusive interview to the Rio Grande Guardian International News Service. She explained what FemCity is all about and how the Brownsville chapter embraces women from all walks of life. She said the chapter has 17 millionaires, along with women that did not even have a home when they joined.

“I was raised to serve and lead,” Garcia said. “My other last name is Guerrero, which means warrior. So I was born a warrior, and I’m an advocate of South Texas. This has actually been on my resume for a long time. And, because I was born to lead and serve… as the oldest of eight siblings, this has been something that is just innate for me. However, until 2017 (when I started FemCity Brownsville), I didn’t believe enough in myself, to know that this was something that can be done in our community.”
