McAllen, Texas – What is being billed as the largest career expo South Texas has ever seen will take place Wed. Feb. 22 at the McAllen Convention Center.
More than 200 employers will be there and they will be looking to hire workers on the spot. More than 8,500 jobs need to be filled in industries such as healthcare, government, construction, hospitality, retail, administrative support and more, say organizers.
The event, titled Jumpstart Career Expo 2023, is being organized by the McAllen Chamber of Commerce in conjunction with the Texas Workforce Commission and Workforce Solutions. Among the companies that will have booths at the expo are Coca Cola, Frito-Lay, Halliburton, Texas A&M University, Hidalgo County, Texas Department of Transportation, BrandSafway, and South Texas Health System, which is the title sponsor.
The event, which will run from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on the 22nd, is free and open to the public. Attendees can expect resume building assistance, free professional headshots and haircuts, and more to help them find their next career opportunity.
McAllen Chamber President & CEO Josh Mejia said the number of companies looking to hire staff at the expo has exceeded expectations. He said the goal was 150 employers offering 6,000 jobs. Those numbers have been easily surpassed.
“The McAllen Chamber of Commerce is proud, alongside its partners, to deliver the largest career expo in South Texas to address the ongoing workforce challenges businesses continue to face nationwide,” Mejia said. “Jumpstart Career Expo 2023 will also provide free resources to make the hiring process easier and enticing for residents of the Rio Grande Valley. We cannot thank the business community enough for its unifying effort to deliver such a unique and accessible project for future employees.”
Workforce Solutions Chief Executive Officer Francisco Almaraz said his organization was proud to be co-hosting the event.
“The Jumpstart Career Expo is just one of the many projects in our agenda designed to meet the hiring needs of employers within our area. The expo is strategically focused on connecting the community with new opportunities and enticing career paths,” Almaraz said.
Here is a video interview with Mejia and Almaraz. They explain why the career expo is important.
