PHARR, Texas – The Rio Grande Valley Linking Economic and Academic Development, also known as RGV LEAD and formerly known as Tech Prep, is a partnership among students, business community and educational institutions in the Rio Grande Valley. The goal is to build up intellectual capital and economic growth in the Rio Grande Valley. In the fall of 2018, RGV LEAD established the What’s Your Big Idea Young Entrepreneurs of the RGV Challenge for 9th thru 12th grade Career and Technical Education (CTE) students. The challenge began on November 15th with a total of 23 teams from across the RGV. Vanguard Rembrandt CTE department entered four teams from the Audio/Video Production and Business, Management and Administration programs. Team 40 was comprised of Abigail Garza (12th) and Juan Garza (9th). Team 43 was comprised of Jabes Gallardo (11th) and Kayla Espinoza. Team 44 was Cameron Gonzalez (12th), Brithany Garza (12th) and Ricardo Hernandez (12th). Team 46 was composed of Vanessa Martinez (9th). The teams were assigned mentors from the business community who helped the teams with their business plans. On January 9th, all four of the Rembrandt teams advanced to the semi-finals. On April 30th, two of the four Rembrandt teams advanced to the final round and Team 40 finished in third place overall winning $250 of seed money to help students develop their idea. The purpose of the contest is to generate inventions and business ideas for the chance to win seed money for their inventions. The event was held at the UTRGV Center for Innovation and Commercialization in Weslaco, Texas.
