EDINBURG, RGV – Newly sworn in Texas Governor Greg Abbott will be in the Rio Grande Valley on Thursday, the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley has confirmed.
Abbott will be on hand at the Edinburg Conference Center at Renaissance on Thursday evening when UnitedHealth Foundation presents a major grant to the UT RGV School of Medicine. According to a news advisory, the grant will “help support health services, literacy and training to underserved communities.”
The advisory also says the grant is part of United Health Foundation’s ‘Helping Build Healthier Communities’ grant program, which “awards grants to non-profits dedicated to improving health in communities.”
The check presentation is part of the Rio Grande Valley Legislative Tour hosted by the Rio Grande Valley Partnership. Twenty to 30 state legislators are expected to be at the event, according to Julian Alvarez, president of the RGV Partnership.
Also slated to appear at the event are Edinburg Mayor Richard Garcia, United Health Group CEO Stephen Hemsley, who is pictured above, UT RGV President Guy Bailey, and Dr. Francisco Fernández, founding dean of the UT RGV School of Medicine.
Alvarez told the Rio Grande Guardian on Monday that a “huge announcement” would take place at Edinburg Conference Center at Renaissance at 6:05 p.m. on Thursday. However, the news advisory from UT RGV lists the time of the check presentation as 6:15 p.m.
Alvarez’s phone is ringing non-stop with calls from people wanting to attend the check presentation event. The event is expected to be packed with people wanting to meet Gov. Abbott. Alvarez told the Rio Grande Guardian that priority will be given to state legislators, tour sponsors and elected officials.
