House Bill 731, filed by state Rep. Eddie Lucio, III, has been voted out of the Texas House. The legislation would qualify Cameron County to use savings from the early graduation program created for a cost-neutral pre-kindergarten program. It is bracketed exclusively to Cameron County. Lucio said high schools within his district have a successful early graduation program, with over 500 graduates so far and 140 projected for this school year. “Given the amount of comprehensive research we have proving the positive effects of prekindergarten programs on the success of young children, we have a perfect, cost-neutral opportunity to take advantage of school districts' current savings,” said Lucio, D-San Benito.
