PHARR, RGV – Pharr Economic Development Corporation Executive Director Victor Perez says he is pleased he can finally confirm the much-anticipated news – Topgolf, a global sports entertainment leader, is coming to his city.
Perez said the speculation had been mounting for weeks now and that he has been fending off a lot of calls from across South Texas and northern Mexico.
“We have been getting calls from across the region, including Mexico, asking us to confirm if it is true, that Topgolf is coming here. This morning I returned some calls to say, yes, it is. We are really excited,” Perez told the Rio Grande Guardian.
Topgolf’s 10th location planned in Texas will be on a 15-acre property will be located along the southeast corner of U.S. Highway 2 and East Frontage Road. The dimensions of the three-level, entertainment venue will be 55,000-square-feet.
“As a family-friendly, fun and engaging venue, Topgolf is a trailblazing attraction that meets the entertainment needs of a broad demographic,” said Pharr Mayor Ambrosio Hernandez. “The location is superb, the climate is ideal, and this venue is a perfect fit for Pharr – I am proud that our great city was selected as the ideal site for Topgolf’s expansion to South Texas.”
Perez said that, according to Topgolf, their new venue will create 350 full- and part-time jobs. It will feature 1,975 square feet of private event space for corporate and social gatherings plus 72 climate-controlled hitting bays that can host up to six players at one time.
“Topgolf estimates it will serve approximately 300,000 visitors in its first year of operation. It is incredible,” Perez said. “And, nearly half of all Topgolf guests describe themselves as non-golfers.”
Perez said he and his team worked diligently to land the project.
“Here in Pharr, we are constantly looking at ways to improve the quality of life for our families and visitors. Topgolf will spur economic activity and employment in the City of Pharr, and provide hours of enjoyment for all,” Perez said.
“It is a project we have been working for a while already. We were just waiting for some of the details to be ironed out by legal counsel. This is going to be a great venue for all the families and children, students and adults. There is nothing like it in the Valley. It is going to be popular across the region.”
Asked when it might open, Perez said: “According to Top Golf officials, they want to do a groundbreaking in November, starting construction in mid-November. By mid-Winter next year, we should be up and running.”
Perez said there were a number of people to thank.
“We must say thank you to Topgolf for selecting us over some other cities. I would also like to thank our great mayor, Mayor Hernandez and the leadership of my board. Without the leadership, their guidance and their vision, this would not have happened. So, my hats off to everyone, our city manager, Mr. Juan Guerra, all of those who made this dream come true.”
Perez said local residents can track Topgolf’s progress in Pharr at facebook.com/topgolfpharr and @Topgolf on Twitter and Instagram.
Topgolf Chief Development Officer Chris Callaway said that through the premium experience of play, food and beverage and music, Topgolf is inspiring people of all ages and skill levels – even non-golfers – to come together for playful competition.
Callaway said guests can enjoy point-scoring golf games using microchipped balls that score themselves, showing players the accuracy and distance of their shots instantly on a TV screen in their hitting bay. He said the venue also features an outstanding chef-driven menu, top-shelf drinks, big screen TVs and music in climate-controlled hitting bays for year-round comfort. Year-round programming includes events for kids and families, social leagues, golf tournaments, golf instruction and more.
“Pharr represents an opportunity to bring Topgolf to a fast-growing region in South Texas,” Callaway said. “The unique combination of frequent cross-border traffic, a sizable resident population and proximity to a major retail corridor makes it an exciting location for a Topgolf venue.”
