AUSTIN, Texas – Texas Regional Bank officials chose RGV Day at the state Capitol as the day to hold the grand opening of their new bank in downtown Austin.

This seemed appropriate because TRB started out in South Texas 12 years ago and is headquartered in Harlingen, Texas.

The new Austin bank is one block south of the state Capitol, on Congress Avenue. In fact, it is the nearest bank to the Capitol.

Many dignitaries who were attending RGV Day at the Capitol went to the TRB bank for the grand opening. There, they heard from Michael Scaief, TRB’s chairman and CEO.

“Thanks, everybody, for being here. This is absolutely amazing to have everybody here today. It’s humbling to see this many faces from all over the state. So, thank you,” Scaief said.

“For those of you that don’t know Texas Regional Bank, we started 12 years ago in the Rio Grande Valley with one acquisition of Falfurrias State Bank in the little town of Falfurrias, Texas. We started building out regions and today we have a region in the Rio Grand Valley, (a region in) the Texas Hill Country – we actually have ten locations up here in Texas Hill Country – and Houston and now the DFW region. We’ve gone from one location, in 12 years, to 28 locations and today we are at about, I would guess, $2.6 billion in assets. We also have a mortgage division, a trust division, a wealth management division, insurance, economic development, public finance and, hopefully soon, capital markets.”

Scaief said it was a special day, personally speaking.

“It is a pretty exciting day for me. I’m a Longhorn, went to school here. This area, I’ve seen it change and, gosh, build over the last number of years,” he said.

“And what you’ve got, when you look around these offices, what you’ll see is something very similar to what we do at all our locations. All of the pictures create a conversation and this is a history of the community here in Austin.  I think it’s fun to look at and reflect about all the amazing things that have happened here over the last 100-plus years.”

Scaief added: “Thanks again for coming out today. And pick up new account kits on your way out. Please. Thank you, guys.”

The line about picking up a new account kit drew laughs from the audience.

TRB in Central Texas

In a statement, Texas Regional Bank said it has had great success opening banking centers on the outskirts of Austin. Namely, San Marcos in 2018, Dripping Springs in 2019, and Bee Cave in 2020.

“We’re pleased to announce that, after years of growing around Austin, we opened a new banking center in the heart of the city, one block from the Texas Capitol. Thank you to our surrounding communities who contribute to our continued growth. We couldn’t do it without you,” TRB stated.

The address for TRB’s Austin Banking Center is: 1001 Congress Ave, Suite 150, Austin, TX 78701.
