SOUTH TEXAS HEALTH SYSTEM CLINICS TO OFFICIALLY LAUNCH THE REGION’S FIRST PEDIATRIC NEPHROLOGY & HYPERTENSION CLINIC WITH GRAND OPENING AND RIBBON CUTTING
The Edinburg-based clinic will offer specialized care for children suffering with kidney-related issues and high blood pressure
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a growing health problem worldwide, according to the World Health Organization. In the United States alone, approximately 37 million people have the condition. While chronic kidney disease is rare in children, health experts have noticed a rise in pediatric cases over the past 20 years.
The condition, also known as chronic renal disease and chronic kidney failure, decreases overall kidney function and permanently damages the kidneys, according to health experts.
The most common causes of chronic kidney disease in infants and children include birth defects, congenital abnormalities and hereditary diseases, such as polycystic kidney disease. Frequent urinary tract infections (UTIs) in children should be promptly treated and further evaluated, as urinary tract abnormalities may potentially lead to chronic kidney disease.
To help address kidney-related issues and high blood pressure in children, South Texas Health System Clinics is opening STHS Clinics Pediatric Nephrology & Hypertension Clinic in Edinburg. Led by Khurrum Siddique, MD, it’s the first dedicated pediatric nephrology and hypertension clinic in the Rio Grande Valley.
The pediatric clinic will offer comprehensive diagnosis, treatment and management of many disorders affecting the kidneys and urinary tract, including kidney failure, high blood pressure, urinary tract infections, kidney stones, high blood pressure and abnormalities in the urine, such as blood and protein.
With the support of South Texas Health System Children’s, Dr. Siddique will provide dialysis treatments for children locally. STHS Clinics will host a grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony to officially mark the opening of the specialized care clinic, which is conveniently located near Dove Avenue E. and N. McColl Road in Edinburg, on Thursday, February 16. In addition to touring the facility, attendees will have the opportunity to meet with Dr. Siddique, who is a board-certified pediatric physician and specializes in pediatric nephrology and hypertension.
