MCALLEN, Texas – Colombian-born entrepreneur and industrial engineer Lina Garza has explained why she is running for Hidalgo County Republican Party chairwoman.
Garza, currently a precinct chair in north McAllen, says she wants to make the GOP more “visible, inclusive, and welcoming” in Hidalgo County. In an interview with the Rio Grande Guardian she said she recently met voters who did not know the Republican Party existed at the local level.
“They never knew we had a GOP here in the Valley. They are very curious how they become a Republican,” Garza said. “We need to spread the word, we are here. We are not only a Democratic area. The GOP has a presence here.”
In a flyer promoting her campaign, Garza lists five bullet points. They are:
- Ensure Hidalgo County GOP is welcoming and inclusive
- Identify and correct any unethical activities in the Party
- Stand with law enforcement
- Support federal action to Secure our Border
- Be a leader in educating our youth and future voters to end the one-party system that has controlled local politics for decades
In the flyer, Garza said: “As Chairwoman, I promise to work passionately to grow and strengthen our Republican Party here in Hidalgo County. Recent elections have shown that the one-party system, particularly at the local level, has hurt our community. Our elected officials at every level should create positive change to create a better community. I will work with local candidates to ensure they put our community first. I’d be honored to have your vote and support.
In her interview with the Rio Grande Guardian, Garza said the GOP needs a new administration at the local level. “We need a responsible, active, visible, inclusive and welcoming Republican Party.”
She added: “I will always stand up for our Republican values, no matter how hard the fight.”
