EDINBURG, RGV – Jon Stevens, director of development and strategy for Teach for America, says he is looking forward to the next LIVE at Bob’s luncheon.

The Rio Grande Guardian hosts an in-depth conversation about public policy at Bob’s Steak & Chop House in Edinburg every other Tuesday.

The next one in the series is titled “Back to School – Public Education in the RGV.” It takes place Aug. 21, starting at 11:30 AM.

Daniel P. King, superintendent of PSJA ISD.

The confirmed panelists are Ana Gonzalez, executive director of Teach for America, Daniel P. King, superintendent of schools for Pharr-San Juan-Alamo ISD, and Luzelma Canales, executive director of RGV Focus.

“The recently released RGV Focus annual report shows a snapshot of the Valley outperforming the state on nine out of 11 indicators,” Stevens said.

“Additionally, the  national advocacy group, Children at Risk, has visited the Valley to take a closer look at why our students are vastly outperforming what demographic data would otherwise suggest.

Referring to the LIVE at Bob’s event, Stevens said he is looking forward to local educational leaders highlighting what they believe has been done, specifically in pre-K thru 12, to allow Valley students to beat the odds.

“Despite recent progress, we also know that the bar continues to rise as the interconnected world requires ever evolving outcomes from our education system,” Stevens said.

“Panelists will discuss current and future innovations to elevate the local educational system even further.”

Rio Grande Guardian editor Steve Taylor thanked Stevens for helping to organize the event.

“Everyone at the Rio Grande Guardian is looking forward to this important discussion. With the school year about to start, the timing could not be better,” Taylor said.

“It is going to be a in-depth conversation about highly relevant education issues with a stellar panel of experts. We thank them all for agreeing to participate.”
